Re: “Wrongful Convictions and the Death Penalty in America: A Fireside Chat with Sister Helen Prejean,” September 23, 2022, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Eck Visitors Center Auditorium, U of Notre Dame

Subject: Does Truth Matter?: Sister Prejean, Wrongful Convictions & The Death Penalty

From:  Dudley Sharp, independent researcher, death penalty expert, former opponent, 832-439-2113, CV at bottom

It is instructive that Notre Dame would choose Sister Prejean for this chat, as her book, "The Death of Innocents", was a total disaster of inaccuracies, as detailed (1), with such the topic of the chat.

With the Catholic Church and the death penalty, we are dealing with significant willful ignorance, with an intentional lack of fact checking, vetting or critical thinking, for, nearly, 30 years, as detailed throughout.

From 1995 (EV) (2), through today (CCC 2267) (3), the Church insists that our criminal justice systems are so advanced that the death penalty should not be used. The Church has completely, neglected reality (4) and put many more innocents at risk (4), as a 15 second search would have shown Her (4), and which has occurred during the full force or the priest sex scandal, when the Church should have been most aware of more innocent victims, but was and is not . . . different topics, but similar Church actions and non-actions.

What we have learned, from the priest sex scandals, is that the Church did not and would not police herself, without outside pressure, nor has She done so with the death penalty . . . nor will She. As with the priest sex scandal, She will have to be forced into the truth (5) and no one will be surprised, again.

As inscribed on Notre Dame's Laetare Medal “Magna est veritas et praevalebit” (“Truth is mighty, and it shall prevail”).

We shall see. The U of Notre Dame has 17 days to fact check, vet and use critical thinking. Will they? Not until forced.

Update: As of Sept. 23, 2022, the truth did not prevail, as predicted. Law Professor Jimmy Gurule, Law Dean Marcus Cole, Sister Prejean and all those addressed were all, somehow, ignorant of this email or they could not be honest with the audience, as they chose not to reveal this letter with their audience.
